WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL FALLOUT 3 HYPE-THREAD

This thread will be dedicated to the discussion and hyping of the upcoming game Fallout 3, developed by Bethesda Studios. This thread serves to snag newcomers attention, and make the fans even more excited. Fallout 3 is a ways away from being on store shelves, but I'll be updating the thread whenever points of interest strike, so be sure to check back here. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy the thread.

THE ESSENTIALS OF FALLOUT 3

 • The latest installment in the critically acclaimed Fallout series! When a great war break out on the surface of earth, mankind is forced underground to protect themselves from the deadly nuclear radiation. That's when VaultTec decides to present the vaults. The vaults are enclosed areas under the crust where men and women are kept safe. They are provided with food, water, and technology. You are a resident of Vault 101, but things are about to change when the door opens up.

 • RPG and SHOOTER United. While the first two Fallout games were developed by Black Isle Studios, the studio has since been shut down. Bethesda Studios has taken up the challenge, and added their vision of what Fallout 3 should be. The game sports the fundamentals of RPG game play including experience, inventory management, skills, item collection, and advancing your character to be a bigger and more hardened fighter. You have to option to play the game in first-person or third-person. On the combat side you can play using a turned based system (reminiscent of past Fallout games) or you can just rush in guns blazing.

 • A dark and lengthy adventure into ruin. Bethesda has said that if you choose to do a straight shoot down the single player story, the game will last you 70+ hours. If you choose to do any of the hundreds of side quests, and some exploring, it will take you a whole lot longer.

 • Never one way to end things. Fallout 3 will have hundreds of different endings depending on you actions and choices throughout the game. A homeless man will ask you for some money to start his own small business. If you turn him down, perhaps later in the game you will need a certain item, an item his business was going to create.

 • Exploration is key, freedom is a choice The world is open for you to explore from the beginning of the game till the credits roll. If you see a small shack, go and search the attic, basement, cabinets and drawers. Explore the highest mountains to the deepest caves, all while the dark atmosphere hangs over you. But be careful mutated residents have taken control of the area, and they aren't friendly.

 • Good boy! The faithful and scruffy pooch named Dogmeat has returned from past Fallout games. He is your faithful companion in combat, discovery. You can issue him to plunder the world and collect items for you, and he'll being them back to aid you. However, if Dogmeat dies, there is no way to resurrect him. He will be gone for the rest of the game.

 • Till' death do us part. You will begin the game as a small child, and will be crawling around a play-pen in first-person. You can do things like read children's books to learn about the game's mechanics. The game will skip ahed to your tenth birthday, and finally to your adulthood where the vault you have been sealed in has opened up, and your free to go.

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY

When will the game be available for purchase?

Fallout 3 does not have a definite release date as of yet. It's scheduled for a Q4 2008 release, and Bethesda expects October/November release date. Check back here when the date is official.

What consoles is Fallout 3 on?

Below are the various versions of Fallout 3. Please note that the Xbox 360 is the leading platform, but Bethesda has stated that all of the systems run Fallout 3 perfectly, there will be no downgrading for any of the platforms. Good news indeed.

Is there a Collector's Edition available?

Why yes, there is! All of the hardcore Fallout fans will be happy to know the the Fallout 3 Collector's Edition is packed to the gills with extra content, delightful trinkets, and a look at how such a complex game is make. Here are the specifics of what is bundled with the content-packed Collector's Edition:

 • The Fallout 3 game. The newest Fallout installment in all of it's plastic circular glory!

 • A Vault-Boy bobble head! You see that cheery fellow that pops up every time Fallout is mentioned? That's Vault-Boy! He is used as a sort of mascot for the Vaults. There in truth they are dank, oppressive places, but Vault-Boy is here to make it all better with his bright smile!

 • Art book of Fallout 3. This hard-bound, 100+ page book displays concept art from Fallout 3. With a game aiming so carefully at atmosphere, it will be interesting to see where it all started.

 • A making-of DVD. Fallout 3 is a huge game, and will be a coding beast. A lot of people have been working non stop on this title for while now, and it will be great to see the process of the games creation. EDITOR'S NOTE: As an owner of the Oblivion Collector's Edition (Bethesda's most recent title)I can honestly say that they made a great making-of DVD. These gat packed along in Collector's Editions a lot nowadays, but these ones might actually be worth your time!

 • A steel Fallout 3 lunchbox! Brown-baggin' it? Why not metalfallout3lunchbox it? Now long days at the office are aided thanks to lunch breaks - now more fun with the Fallout 3 lunch box. All of the items mentioned above will be packaged inside this box, so it serves a double purpose.

THE HISTORY OF FALLOUT

Let's face it, a lot of us haven't played the past Fallout games. However, we don't want that to stop us from enjoying Fallout 3! Below I have included a a break down of Fallout and Fallout 2. NOTE: Sorry, I will not be including a synopsis of of Fallout Tactics due to lack of a detailed story. By clicking on the link below there are descriptions of the events in Fallout, and Fallout 2. Be warned though, spoilers abound!
The player initially has 150 days before the Vault's water supply runs out. This time limit can be extended by 70 days if he commissions merchants inthe Hubto send water caravans to Vault 13. Upon returning the chip, the Vault Dweller is then tasked with destroying a mutant army that threatens humanity. A mutant known as "The Master" (previously known asRichard Grey) has begun using a pre-war, genetically engineered virus calledForced Evolutionary Virus to convert humanity into a race of "Super Mutants", and bring them together in theUnity, his plan for a perfect world. The player is to kill him and destroy theMilitary Basehousing the supply of FEV, thus halting the invasion before it can start.

If the player does not complete both objectives within 500 game days, the mutant army will discover Vault 13 and invade it, bringing an end to the game. This time limit is shortened to 400 days if the player divulged Vault 13's location to thewater merchants. A cinematic cut-scene of mutants overrunning the vault is shown if the player fails to stop the mutant army within this time frame, indicating the player has lost the game. If the player agrees to join the mutant army, the same cinematic is shown.

In version 1.1 of the game, the time limit for the mutant attack on Vault 13 is eliminated, allowing players to explore the game world at their leisure.

The player can defeat the Master and destroy the Super Mutants' Military Base in either order. When both threats are eliminated, a cut-scene ensues in which the player automatically returns to Vault 13. There he is told that he has changed too much and his return would negatively influence the citizens of the Vault as a negative role model. Thus he is rewarded with exile into the desert, for, in theOverseer's eyes, the good of the vault. There is an alternate ending (available if the player has the "Bloody Mess" trait, or has accrued significant negative karma throughout the game) in which the Vault Dweller draws a handgun and shoots the Overseer after he is told to go in exile.

During 2241, Arroyo suffered the worst drought on record. Faced with the difficulty, the village elders asked the direct descendant of theVault Dweller, referred to as theChosen One, to perform the quest of retrieving aGarden of Eden Creation Kit(GECK) for Arroyo. The GECK is a device that can create thriving communities out of the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

The player, assuming the role of the Chosen One, is given nothing more than the Vault Dweller's jumpsuit, a RobCoPIPBoy 2000handheld device, aVault 13water flask, and some cash to start the mission.

The player eventually findsVault 13(the first place possible to obtain a GECK) devoid of the majority of its former human inhabitants. The Chosen One returns to find his village captured by the remnants of theUnited Statesgovernment known as "The Enclave". The player, through variety of means, activates an ancient oil tanker and its autopilot, thus allowing him to reach the Enclave's main base on an offshore oilrig.

It is revealed that the dwellers of Vault 13 were captured as well, to be used as test subjects for FEV (Forced Evolutionary Virus). Vault 13 was supposed to be closed for 200 years as part of an Enclave experiment, this makes them perfect test subjects. The Enclave modified the Forced Evolutionary Virus into an airborne disease, designed to attack any living creatures with mutated DNA. With all genetic impurities removed, the Enclave (who remain protected from radiation) could take over . The player frees both his village (Arroyo) and the Vault 13 dwellers from Enclave control, and destroys the Enclave's oilrig. In the ending, the inhabitants of Vault 13 and Arroyo villagers create a new prosperous community with the help of the GECK.
Let's not be grateful to the game that killed the whole idea of exploration and is serving as a precursor to the third game in a series well-known for its theme of exploration.

Actually, we KNOW they've taken away: A) The original turn based gameplay. B) The ability to go through the game without any combat whatsoever. C) Dozens of retcons. LAWL SUPER QUICK GHOULS?! D) They're, "Focusing more on gameplay than story" (Emil). E) They're focusing their stuff on the console, while forcing the PC to go back to console level graphics. F) The overall mood of the game has changed. I mean I could go on and on and on and on.

You might want to edit the plot synopsis of Fallout and Fallout 2 in the original post. I know they are numerous people on these forums who want to play the originals before Fallout 3 and the OP kind of gives away everything.

based off Oblivion, I can safely assume that story, characters, diolougue, and humor, the things that made fallout so great, are gonna be completly missing in Fallout 3.

and the developers have actually said that those are an afterthought to the actually gameplay.

Most excellent thread, for what will undoubtedly be an excellent game, which in my mind will be an easy front runner for GOTY 2008. And despite the cries of a few elitist hermits who want to live in the past, (TeY BAstArdIZed mUh GAMe aNd maDE iT tEh oBLIvioN WIth gUnz. ) there is nothing on the contrary to suggest that this:

will end up being inferior to Fallout 1 and 2, regardless of any new gameplay mechanics that hermits consider to be the "casualization of the series."

Look at it this way, the Fallout series as a whole will get more exposure than it ever would have. But again, there are that elitist few who feel as if the game is somehow "theirs", and it should not be "consolized for TeH N00BZ". As if instead, the original devs should have kept the series, made it themselves according to the whims of the elitist fans of the first 2 games, instead of selling the game to a bigger and better developer who can modernize the series and introduce it to an entirely new audience, who never played Fallout 1 or 2 because they are not PC gamers....such as myself. How very selifish and self centered indeed. Grow up already.

Bottom line, the old Fallout games are not coming back, and Fallout 3 is going to be the redefining of the series, whether you dig it or not. And just because the game is going to be a bit more accessible to console gamers, it in no way means that the game is going to just flat suck, or that "Teh SerIeS iz DeAd."

So, I suggest that you move on with the times, accept change as it comes, and make the best of what is looking to be an extraordinary game that will be the rebirth of a renowned series that many will be introduced to for the first time. Which is not a bad thing at all for the series as a whole, by the way.:|

Vandal pretty much said it right. Fallout 3 is gonna be a good game, by most standards. As poorly designed as Oblivion was, a couple of mods were all it took to turn it into something that more resembled a decent RPG. I expect that Bethesda learned from their biggest mistakes in Oblivion, and will make a better game in Fallout 3. But it just won't be Fallout. They really should have given it a different name.

You can't make a Fallout 3 and then start complaining when people tell you it's too dissimilar to Fallout 1 + 2. You don't call it Fallout if you're going to make a different game.

In other words. Get over yerself dudeMentatAssassin

So your response to my well thought out display of everything Bethesda has taken out from Fallout is, "Get over yourself dude"?

Uh...yes. I felt that was pretty obvious in my post.

You realize I said that Fallout 3 would be a great game right? Its just going to be a CRAPPY fallout game. And I more than backed that statement up.

You might want to edit the plot synopsis of Fallout and Fallout 2 in the original post. I know they are numerous people on these forums who want to play the originals before Fallout 3 and the OP kind of gives away everything.RobbieH1234
I considered that, but since they have such age on them, it seemed okay. Anyone who reads those probably doesn't want to play the older games.

Can you at least put them in spoiler tags?

Sure, how do you do it?

You can't make a Fallout 3 and then start complaining when people tell you it's too dissimilar to Fallout 1 + 2. You don't call it Fallout if you're going to make a different game. It's not rocket science. Zeliard9

Well look on the bright side. If your lucky maybe Bethesda will include Fallout 1 & 2 as unlockable content. Would that make you guys happier?:P

Get out of here and stop Crapping on this thread you fanboy.

Yeah. What he said. I don't really want this to be a "Fallout debate thread," more of a "Fallout Hype Thread" like the title suggests.

The TC is right so let me just say that, having never played Fallout 1 or 2, I am hereby hyping Fallout 3 as AAA and possible game of the year. Who's with me?

Which is not a bad thing at all for the series as a whole, by the way.:|

ironcreed

Great, you should try playing the first 2 games before you tell us what we want and don't want. You sound more elitist than us hermits.

Seriously, play the first 2 games, and then you can voice your opinion. In fact, you can get them both on Amazon right now in a package for like 10 or 15 bucks. Do yourself a favor and buy them, you can run them on windows 95 or 98 even!

A hype thread includes all-encompassing discussion. Look at any other hype thread, such as the two stickied ones. If you can't argue against the points people are making against the game, then don't. But don't whine that people are discussing the game on a discussion board.

If you want a pure, 100% positive, ass-licking hype thread, then go make it in the Fallout 3 forum, rather than a forum called "System Wars". Geniuses.

It's not rocket science. Ion Storm slapped the "Deus Ex" tag on Invisible War and nearly brought down that entire franchise along with their company.

You know what this is exactly like? It would be like if Saints Row wasn't called Saints Row, but rather GTA4. As in, if Volition had picked up the GTA franchise, and created Saints Row as GTA4, that's what Bethesda making Fallout 3 is like. Volition may have made a good game, but if there's one thing Saints Row isn't, it's GTA.

Zeliard9

They did not learn from Morrwind, it was dumbed down and then with oblivion they completely dumbed it down by making practically not a rpg.

So I doubt they will "learn" for them all they want is what gets them the most cash at the time.

But there is not much I can do except not buy them, but I still like there games (so I buy them anyways:P) just not as much.

Q: is any one from the oringal dev team from interplay gonna work on Fallout 3?
